NEW DELHI: Punjabi actor and comedian Gurpreet Ghuggi, who has been appointed as the new convener of the Aam Aadmi party (AAP) in Punjab in place of the sacked convener Sucha Singh Chhotepur, may find himself as an easy target for opponents because of his comments in the past from various platforms.

Ghuggi, who joined the Aam Aadmi Party in February, may face flak from hardliners for praising the role of Punjab Police during the time of militancy in the state.

Then there are sections in Punjab which have not forgotten the Akali-Nirankari clashes of 1978 which showed the seeds of militancy in the state. They will dig up this video of Ghuggi speaking in the presence of the late Nirankari chief Baba Hardev Singh at an event.

Ghuggi has acted in many films, including Speedy Singhs, Namastey London, Ambarsariya and Race.

He will take charge of his new responsibility soon as there seems to be no possibility of Sucha Singh Chhotepur returning to the party post.

The AAP seemed to be in an unassailable position vis-a-vis Congress and the Akali-BJP combine till the recent sacking of Sucha Singh Chhotepur following a video clip showing him accepting money from a party volunteer.

The floating of Awaz-e-Punjabi by former cricketer and BJP MP Navjot Sidhu, who was once on the verge of joining the AAP, has also added to the panic in the party which is being headed by MP Bhagwant Mann in the election campaign. Punjab goes to polls in February.
