TORONTO: Jagmeet Singh, 38, who was elected the leader of the federal NDP earlier this month, on Friday resigned as the Member of Provincial Parliament (MPP) in Ontario.

In a statement, Jagmeet said, “It has been an honour serving the people of Bramalea-Gore-Malton and I’m looking forward to continuing this work on the federal level, building a more fair and just Canada.’’

He has been representing Bramalea-Gore-Malton at Queen’s Park since 2011.

Before his election as the NDP leader, Jagmeet was serving as deputy to Ontario NDP Leader Andrea Horwath.

Usually the leader of any federal party is a member of the House of Commons, but Jagmeet has hinted that he might not seek election to the House of Commons till the next elections due in 2019.
