Patrick Brown woos voters in Ontario with visits to Golden Temple, Varanasi in India

With an eye on the votes of the huge Indo-Canadian community during the upcoming June provincial elections, Ontario Progressive Conservative leader Patrick Brown is on a whirlwind tour of important places in India.

The Ontario PC leader is praying at religious places and getting himself photographed with Bollywood and sports celebrities who have a big fan following in Ontario.

The images of him praying at the Sikhs’ holiest shrine of the Golden Temple in Amritsar and performing Ganga aarti on the banks of the sacred Hindu river in Varanasi will definitely strike a chord with Ontario’s Sikhs and Hindus who form a big vote-bank.

Brown started his visit to india – his 18th so far – on the New Year day with a lunch with Bollywood actress Shilpa Shetty whom he described as a “big fan of Canada.’’

On January 2, Brown visited the Golden Temple where he posed for photographs and served food to the devotees in the langar (community kitchen).

He also met Indian cricket legend Kapil Dev in Delhi on January 3 to discuss what he called “opportunities to strengthen relationships between India and Canada through sports.’’

On Thursday, the PC leader visited the sacred river Ganga in Varanasi to participate in the fabled Ganga aarti at the Dasaswamedh Ghat to “receive blessings for a prosperous 2018 at one of the most sacred rivers to Hindus.’’

Later, he also served food to people in langar on the riverbanks. Varanasi is the parliamentary constituency or riding of Prime Minister Narendra Modi with whom Brown enjoys a close relationship since his days as Gujarat chief minister.

The PC leader also visited the Kashi Vishwanath Mandir in Varanasi to “spirtual peace and blessigns from Lord Shiva.”

Patrick Brown also met Uttar Pradesh chief minister Yogi Adityanath in Varanasi, tweeting “As will be my priority in Ontario, the CM has been focused on restoring good governance and championing economic development.”

During his religious trips, Brown is being accompanied by some PC nominees from Ontario.
