MUMBAI: As Bollywood super star Shah Rukh Khan turns 56 on November, here are the various controversies in his career.
Here are Shah Rukh Khan’s famous controversies:
1 FATWA: When Shah Rukh’s decided to have a third child – AbRam – through a surrogate mother, it angered Muslim clerics, with Bareilly’s Markazi Darul Ifta Dargah Al Hazrat issuing a fatwa saying that hiring a surrogate mother violated Sharia laws.
2 SMOKING: Often criticized for smoking in public, Shah Rukh was slapped with a case while smoking at the Sawai Man Singh Stadium in Jaipur during an IPL match.
3 SALMAN KHAN: Now friends again, Salman and Shah Rukh were close buddies before they turned enemies. In fact, Salman Khan treated Shah Rukh and his wife Gauri like his own family and helped them settle down in Mumbai when they came to Bollywood in the early 1990s. But then they became vengeful foes. Things became ugly between them when an angry Salman Khan disrupted the shooting of Shah Rukh Khan’s film Chalte Chalte in 2002. Salman barged into the sets and physically manhandled his then girlfriend Aishwariya Rai. This led to a spat between Shah Rukh and Salman. They had another big fight at Katrina’s birthday in 2008. But Salman’s sister Arpita’s wedding in November 2014 brought them together as Shah Rukh congratulated him.
4 AAMIR KHAN: Once Shah Rukh and Aamir Khan were close. No more. In fact, Aamir Khan once in his blog post mentioned that their dog Shah Rukh is licking his feet. Aamir wrote; “Shah Rukh (his dog) is licking my feet and I am feeding him biscuits now and then. What more can I ask for? Now before you jump to any conclusions, let me add that Shah Rukh is the name of our dog. And before you jump to any further conclusions, let me add that I had nothing do with naming him. In fact, Shah Rukh is the dog of the caretakers of our house.”
5 JFK AIRPORT: Shah Rukh Khan’s detention at New York’s JFK Airport in 2009 for two hours made headlines. The actor said he was detained because his name is Khan. He was again questioned when he went to address a convocation at Yale University which bestowed Chubbb Fellowship on him.
6 SHIV SENA: Shah Rukh earned the ire of Shiv Sena and other right-wing elements when he said that Pakistani players should be allowed in the third edition of the IPL in 2010. The Sena threatened to block the release of his film My Name is Khan.
7 PRIYANKA CHOPRA: At various events, Shah Rukh and Priyanka were seen getting very cosy and intimate. So Shah Rukh Khan’s link-up with Priyanka led to trouble in his paradise called Mannat (residence). Both tried to maintain distance after the headlines. For this reason, Gauri doesn’t like Priyanka. Even SRK’s friend Karan Johar sides with Gauri and maintains distance from Priyanka.
8 FARAH KHAN: At a party for Sanjay Dutt’s Agneepath, Shah Rukh attacked Farah Khan’s husband and filmmaker Shirish Kunder. An angry Farah smsed friends, “Shah Rukh has always told me that physical abuse is the worst way 2 sort out a problem, n that its means the person who’s hitting has either a personal or professional crisis going on, n it saddens me 2 see him doing the same (sic).” But they sorted out the issue.
9 WANKHEDE BAN: After a match between his team Kolkata Knight Riders and Mumbai Indians at the Wankhede Stadium in May 2012, Shahrukh got into a verbal spat with security people. This led the Mumbai Cricket Association to ban him from the stadium.
