NEW YORK: Over two dozen letters hand-written by the world’s most famous scientist Albert Einstein, whose theories led to the development of the atomic bomb, were auctioned for over $420,000 by California-based auction house Profiles in History.

Purchased by various bidders, the letters – 27 in all – were written by Einstein over the years when he was not discovering new theories or playing violin. Written in English and German, the letters belonged to a private collector and fetched him $420,625.

One letter written by the greatest scientist to his son in 1945 after the US bombed the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki went for $62,500. In that letter, Einstein explained to his son the Theory of Relativity and how it led to the development of the atomic bomb.

In one letter, Einstein consoles his friend who had found out that her husband was cheating on her.

There was also a letter that Einstein wrote to his uncle on his 70th birthday, telling him how the toy steam engine he had gifted him made science his lifelong passion.

On other letters, Einstein wrote about God, Nazism and McCarthyism in the US.
