Elections Canada says the 44th general election will cost $502 million

TORONTO: Will Justin Trudeau’s Liberals be able to translate their seven percent lead over the Conservative Party into a majority government on September 20?
That’s a million-dollar question as the Prime Minister has gotten parliament dissolved after meeting Governor General Mary Simon today, requesting her to order fresh egenral elections on September 20.
As required by law, the campaign for the country’s 44th general election will last 36 days.
Trudeau’s Liberal Party has been running a minority government for over two years now and the next general election was due in October 2023.
With 155 seats in the outgoing House of Commons, the Liberals were short of a simple majority by 15 seats. The Conservatives Party may find to reach the tally of 119 seats in the dissolved House. But the New Democrats under Jagmeet Singh are expected to do better than 24 seats they held in the outgoing House of Commons.
The latest opinion polls give the ruling Liberal Party (35.6 percent) a lead of over seven points over the opposition Conservative Party (28.8 percent).
Jagmeet Singh-led New Democratic Party is in third place with 19.3 percent support.
If the trends hold, the Liberals likely to cross the majority mark of 170 seats in the 338-member House of Commons.
