NEW DELHI: Dilli Haat – a hub of Indian crafts and cuisine and cultural events in the Indian national capital – is one of the important places on Delhi tourism map.
It is the brainchild of renowned urban planner Pradeep Sachdev who passed away on May 31, 2020, at the age of 63.
Announcing his passing, Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia tweetd, “Architect of Delhi’s iconic Dilli Haat & Garden of Five Senses Pradeep Sachdeva is no more. The spaces he created have become architectural landmarks for our city brought alive by his imaginative design. RIP.”
Run by Delhi Tourism since its opening in 1994, Dill Haat is one of the most famous tourist places in the national capital.
Over the years, this writer has taken many visitor friends, who don’t venture out of the Indian capital, to this place to enjoy various festivals and cultural events.
The Holi mela of this place is not to be missed. Dilli Haat is packed for this festival of colours which heralds the advent of summer. Special cultural troupes from Vrindaban and other places come here to enact ancient scenes of Holi between Krishna and gopis. It is a must-see event for any visitor to the Indian capital.
You can splash anyone with colours or even water and no one minds on that day.
But Holi is just one of the many cultural events held at this venue all over the year.
Dilli Haat is one place where you can savour ethnic food from all parts of India as almost every state has been allotted a hut or stall to sell their delicacies. Momos from North-East states such as Sikkim are quite a hit with visitors.
Then there are huts that sell you Indian crafts, and ethnic ware.
Not surprisingly, Dilli Haat – spread over six acres – has been become the favourite place for leisure, fun and food for Delhiites and visitors. (This article first appeared in our sister website on December 8, 2012)

Dilli Haat has become one of the “must see” attractions. We have been there a few times and enjoyed diverse cuisines and shopping. I wonder if they are still having puppet shows and ethnic & tribal dances. It is one of my favourite places.
Wonderful to be among your own. I have die-hard dedication for my roots.
