A fake halal scam has shocked Muslim-majority Malaysia as the authorities have arrested four persons for the crime.
The arrested persons belong to a meat importing company which imported meat from Ukraine, Brazil, Argentina and China, and sold it as halal meat by repackaging it with a halal logo, according to The Strait Times daily of Malaysia.
About 1,500 tonnes of frozen meat was seized during a recent raid on a warehouse of the company in Senai in Johor state.
Documents seized during the raid showed that the scam has been going on since 2015.
The guilty in this fake halal meat offending Muslims of Malaysia face up to 20 years in jail, according to the newspaper.
