NEW DELHI: The wife and the US-based daughter of flying Sikh Milkha Singh have joined the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP).

The mother-daughter duo filled out the membership forms of the AAP in Chandigarh.

However, Milkha Singh himself has not joined the AAP. He said his wife and daughter were free to join any party as they were mature people.

“I could have joined politics during Nehru’s or Indira Gandhi’s time. I stay away from these things,’’ the legendary athlete said.

Milkha Singh was very close to Prime Minister Nehru and later Indira Gandhi.

In fact, it was Nehru who convinced Milkha Singh to go to the Indo-Pak Meet in Lahore in 1960 as the young Sikh who had lost his parents in the Partition didn’t want to go to Pakistan. In the end, Milkha Singh beat the then Asian Games gold medalist Abdul Khaliq. Actually, he got the nickname of `the flying Sikh’ from the Pakistanis.
