2: The Golden Temple: The Sikh holiest shrine dazzles the world for its golden work. The foundation of the Golden Temple was laid in 1588 and the building completed in 1604. The shrine was destroyed by Afghans durign Ahmed Shah Abdali raids on India. The present building was built in 1764 by Sikh leader Jassa Singh Ahluwalia, and its golden work was started and completed by Maharaja Ranjit Singh in 1830.
