TORONTO: Toronto Police have arrested a man in the murder of Indian student Kartik Vasudev in the heart of Toronto on April 7.

Richard Jonathan Edwin, 39, who has been taken into custody, fired multiple shots at the 21-year-Indian student outside the Sherbourne subway station at about 5 pm last Thursday. He fled the scene after the shooting.

Two days later on Saturday evening, the accused killed another man – identified as 35-year-old Elijah Eleazar Mahepath – as he was walking westbound on the north side of Dundas Street East near George Street, hitting him with multiple shots and then fleeing from the scene.

Making this announcement at a news conference, Toronto Police chief James Ramer said the suspect was traced on the basis of video surveillance footage and arrested from his residence in the area of Spadina Avenue and Bloor Street West on Sunday night.

Police also seized many loaded firearms, including a rifle, from the accused.

The police chief said, “My personal opinion is there were going to be more victims. When, I don’t know but he had an arsenal at home and quite frankly I believe this may have just been the first step.”

Police said these were random attacks and the victims were not known to the accused or each other.

The accused, who has been charged with two counts of first-degree murder, appeared at College Park Court.

Police said the accused has no criminal record and they have limited information about him and his motives.
