NEW DELHI: An attempt to exhume to the body of the legendary folk singer Kuldeep Manak, who died two years ago, was foiled on Sunday night when the late singer’s wife Sarabjit Kaur and four others persons tried to open the grave at his native Jalal village in Bhatinda district in Punjab.
Villagers informed the police when Sarabjit Kaur, accompanied by four persons – Surinder Singh from Sarabha Nagar (Ludhiana), Rajwinder Singh of Rai Khanna village and Binder Ram and Gurdeep Singh- tried to exhume the singer’s body by using a JCB machine late on Sunday, according to the daily Tribune.
The SHO of the nearby Dialpura police station reached the spot and arrested the four men while Sarabjit Kaur managed to escape, according to the report.
Sarabjit Kaur reportedly wanted to raise a memorial to her late husband as Jalaldiwal village near Raikot. But the residents of Jalal village opposed it.
Born Muhammad Latif in 1951 in Jalal village, he later changed his name to Kuldeep Manak and passed away in December 2011 after a brief illness.
Though it is not known whether Kuldeep Manak formally converted to Sikhism, he married Sikh woman Sarabjit Kaur as per Sikh rites. His son, who is carrying on his legacy as a singer, is named Yudhvir Manak. His daughter is named Shakti.
