MISSISSAUGA: After British Columbia where hundreds of Indo-Canadian youths have died in gang wars since the 1990s, Indo-Canadian gang wars have now come to Mississauga and Brampton.

Jastaran Sandhu, an 18-year-old man from Mississauga, has been arrested and charged with first-degree murder in a shooting incident that happened near Airport Road and Derry Road on Friday evening.

A 21-year-old Brampton man died and two were injured in the shooting that happened between two groups on Hull Street near Airport Road and Derry Road at about 8 pm on Friday.

Peel Police said the shooting took place as two groups of men became involved in an altercation.

During the altercation, men from one group struck two men from the other group with gunshots and fled the scene.

Reports say 18-20 men were involved in the shooting. These two groups were reportedly involved in many incidents of fighting throughout the day and the shooting was the culmination of these incidents.

Two men with wounds were transported to area hospitals, where one of the men, a 21-year-old man from Brampton, died from the injuries he sustained.

The second man was treated and later released from hospital.

A third man was treated by paramedics for a non-gunshot related injury, transported to a hospital for further treatment and later released.

Nick Milinovich, Deputy Chief of Investigations and Emergency Services, said, “Gun violence carries tragic outcomes which will not be tolerated by our community or our service.

“We will be relentless in our pursuit to of those responsible for this incident.  Similarly, we are committed to working with our communities to prevent other tragedies from occurring.”

Jastaran Sandhu will appear in court to face first-degree murder charges.

Friday’s deadly shooting points to the start of Indo-Canadian gang wars involving youths in Brampton and Mississauga.

Rival gangs have fought violently in various city malls and plazas in recent months.
