First two cases of the new Covid variant in Canada have been confirmed in a couple in Durham region, says Dr. Barbara Yaffe, Ontario’s Associate Chief Medical Officer of Health

TORONTO: As Ontario came down complete lockdown on Saturday to the check the rising cases of Covid-19, a new variant of the virus which spreads faster has now been found in Canada.

According to Dr. Barbara Yaffe, Ontario’s Associate Chief Medical Officer of Health, the first two cases of the new variant have been identified in the Durham region.

The cases are a couple with no known travel history, exposure or high-risk contacts. They are now in self-isolation as per public health protocols.

“Durham Region Health Department has conducted case and contact investigation and Ontario is working in collaboration with our federal counterparts at the Public Health Agency of Canada,” said Dr. Yaffe.

The new variant, which has been found in the UK, Denmark and other countries, can spread easier and faster, but there is no evidence that it is more likely to cause severe illness.

Ontario is implementing testing at Toronto Pearson International Airport for incoming passengers.
