NEW DELHI: A 15-year-old Sikh girl in Pakistan has topped the matriculation exams.
Manbir Kaur, a student at Shri Guru Nanak Devji High School at Nankana Sahib, topped the exams by scoring 1,035 marks out of 1,100.
A baptized Sikh, Manbir Kaur is the daughter of Gurdwara Sri Nankana Sahib head priest Giani Prem Singh. She also regularly does kirtan at Gurdwara Nankana Sahib which is the birthplace of the first Sikh Guru Nanak Dev.
Since Manbir wants to become a doctor, she has taken admission at Punjab Group of Medical Colleges in Lahore.
The Pakistan Sikh Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee has honoured her by presenting her with the ceremonial siropa.
There are between 20,000 and 30,000 Sikhs in Pakistan. They are scattered in Punjab, KP and Sindh. Over 200 Sikh families live in Nankana Sahib.
Minorities, who accounted for 23 percent of Pakistan’s population in 1947, today make up just 3 percent of the population.
Though not all cases come to light, there have been dozens of known cases of forcible conversions of Hindu and Sikh girls to Islam for marriages.
The Sikh community of Pakistan has reported that over 100 Sikh girls have been forced to convert to Islam and marry Muslim boys during the past three years alone.
