Woman commits suicide outside Punjab CM’s residence

CHANDIGARH: A 63-year-old woman from Nurmahal near Jalandhar, who came to meet Punjab Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi to seek redressal of her family-related land dispute, died outside his residence in Chandigarh on Thursday after consuming poison.

In a bid to cultivate the image of a common man, Channi, who is the first Dalit chief minister of Punjab, has been encouraging people to meet him personally with their grievances. 

The woman, who reportedly had a land dispute with her brother and sister-in-law over their ancestral property, was not allowed to enter the chief minister’s residence by security men.

Unable to meet the chief minister, she went into a toilet, consumed poison. and fell unconscious.

Channi’s security called the police who rushed her to Government Multi Specialty Hospital in Sector 16. But she was declared brought dead by doctors.

The woman’s son said his mother had come to meet the chief minister after he had assured her of help.

But the chief minister’s office refused to comment on the incident.
