CHANDIGARH: Even as Bhagwant Mann, 48, took oath as Punjab’s 17th chief minister at martyr Bhagat Singh’s village of Khatkar Kalan on Wednesday, his America-based daughter and son flew in to attend their father’s swearing-in ceremony.

Seerat Kaur Mann, 21, and Dilshan Mann,17, live in America with their mother Inderjeet Kaur who divorced Mann in 2015 after he became MP.

Mann’s wife told Indian Express that her two children are in India for attending their father’s swearing-in.

“Both our children have reached India and they will attend Bhagwant’s swearing-in ceremony at Khatkar Kalan. They are overwhelmed and very excited. They need some time to sink in this feeling,” Inderpreet Kaur said.

Wishing her ex-husband well, she said, “I always worked hard for his success but behind his back. I have never said anything bad about him. He has always been in my prayers all these years and will always continue to be. Yes, there was physical distance but that doesn’t mean we were not praying for his success. It’s just that I was busy here in the US with my work and children’s studies.”

Inderjeet Kaur , who comes from Bhadewal in Ludhiana, married Bhagwant Mann who became famous even during his college days in the 1990s when he released his first comedy album. His comedy show Jugnu Kehnda Hai on Alpha ETC Punjabi made him a household name.

With his participation in The Great Indian Laughter Challenge on Star Plus in 2008, Mann became a nationally known comedian as he also went on to act in films such as Main Man Punjab Dee.

Mann entered politics in 2011 by joining Manpreet Badal’s newly formed Punjab People’s Party and unsuccessfully contested the 2012 Punjab assembly election from Lehragaga.

In 2014, he joined the Aam Adami Party and went on to become the party’s MP from Sangrur. He won again from Sangrur in 2019.

In the just concluded Punjab assembly election, Mann won from Dhuri.

When his divorce was finalized in 2015, Bhagwant Mann had said that he chose Punjab over his family.

“Punjab was on one side and the family on the other side. I have moved towards Punjab. The court has decided, I had to choose one of my two families, I have chosen Punjab.”

The cause of their divorce was his wife’s unhappiness about his joining politics even though she had campaigned for him in the 2014 parliamentary elections.
