TORONTO: Canada has announced to admit a record 431,645 new immigrants in 2022.

The figure will go to 447,055 in 2023 and 451,000 in 2024.

Making this announcement on Monday, Sean Fraser, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, said increased immigration is key to Canada’s post-COVID economic recovery.

“Setting bold new immigration targets, as outlined in the 2022-2024 Levels Plan, will further help bring the immeasurable contribution of immigrants to our communities and across all sectors of the economy,” the minister said.

Canada, which has decided to annually admit new immigrants at a rate of about 1 percent of the country’s population, welcomed a record 405,000 new permanent residents in 2021 despite COVID restrictions.

But by 2024, immigration admissions will jump to 1.14 percent of the Canadian population, with nearly 60 percent of new immigrants falling in the economic Class.

Indians are the biggest immigrant groups to enter Canada each year.

India has also become the biggest source of International students for Canadian institutions. Currently, Indian students make up more than 70 percent of all foreign students studying in Canada.
