MISSISSAUGA: Peel Police has arrested a 20-year-old woman from Brampton for duping an elderly man in a “grandparent scam”.

At about 10 am on March, a 75-year-old man in Mississauga got a call on his landline from a male suspect claiming to be his grandson.

The suspect told the Mississauga man that he needed his help as he was in trouble with police and that he had to speak to a police officer.

Another male suspect, pretending to be a police officer, then came on the phone and told the Mississauga man that his grandson needed $10,000 for bail. He was told that a woman would come to his Mississauga address to pick up the money.

A short time later, the woman came and picked up the money from the victim.

On April 1, the victim watched television and saw a news report with a photo of the woman whom he had given the money and an article talking about a “Grandparent Scam”. The victim immediately went to police to report the incident.

On April 2, police arrested Michelle Jordan for fraud.

Police has cautioned residents that if they receive a call similar to this, they should verify the details of the request through another family member. Any requests for money by unverified parties on the phone should be treated suspiciously.

If someone calls claiming to be a lawyer/attorney or police officer, they will not ask you for money/jewelry over the phone.

Residents with elderly family members who live alone, or have published phone numbers, should make them aware of this.

Residents should be cognizant that there are many fraudulent schemes out there, using the internet and phone calls to contact potential victims.

Requests for money should be treated with caution, and an appropriate amount of due diligence should be practiced.
