TORONTO: It’s an Indo-Canadian Punjabi man again.

In ever-increasing cases of Punjabi men being arrested for smuggling drugs into Canada, Punjabi trucker Pardeep Singh, 24, has been nabbed for smuggling 112.5 kg of cocaine from the US into Canada.

Pardeep Singh, who is a resident of LaSalle in Quebec, was caught when his truck entered Fort Erie from the US on June 15.

When he was referred for a secondary examination, inspectors of the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) found approximately 112.5 kg of suspected cocaine hidden inside five duffle bags.

The value of the seized drug haul is about $14 million.

Pardeep Singh was arrested and handed over to RCMP officers.  He will appear at the St. Catharines Courthouse, Ontario, on July 9. The CBSA made public his arrest only today.

Scores of Punjabi men have been arrested recently for smuggling drugs into Canada.

In June, nine Toronto-area Punjabi men were arrested when police forces busted a 20-member drug cartel and seized drugs worth over $61 million from them.

In April, 25 Punjabi men from Brampton were arrested as part of a drug gang which was smuggling cocaine into Canada and distributing it throughout the country through its underground network.

In January, Punjabi trucker Amarpreet Singh Sandhu of Calgary created a smuggling record in Canada when he was arrested with 228.14 kg of methamphetamine worth $28.5 million in the market.

Commenting on the latest arrest, Kim Upper, District Director of the Canada Border Services Agency, said, “Our officers have interrupted the smuggling attempt of a massive amount of narcotics, and have put a full stop to the ripple effect these narcotics would have in neighborhoods across our country. The CBSA is extremely proud of its officers and their ongoing role in safeguarding our borders.”
