TORONTO: A Whitby-area doctor has been charged with fraud for overbilling the Ontario Helath Insurance Plan (OHIP).
Dr Janet Mendonca, 43, of Ajax reportedly overbilled OHIP by more than $170,000 over a three-year period ending in 2016.
The Ministry of Health contacted police after noticing the overbilling.
She has charged under the Health Insurance Act with two counts each for knowingly obtaining payment for any insured service, while not entitled to obtain; and knowingly giving false information in application, return or statement.
Dr Mendonca, who operates clinics in Whitby and Ajax, will appear the Provincial Offences Court in Whitby on November 18.
