Toronto Police warn people that victims are being contacted by the online scammer and given a reason to allow remote access to the victim’s computer

TORONTO: An online scam has cost one of the victims $58,000.
The Toronto Police has warned people about an ongoing remote desktop takeover scam.
Police say people are contacted by the scammer and are provided a reason to allow remote access to the victim’s computer.
The reasons given by the scammer to the victim are: banking security issue, software issue fix, investment opportunities (cryptocurrency), and asset recovery.
The victim is asked to download a free app called “Anydesk”. This app allows the scammer to remotely access the victim’s computer
The victim is then asked to log into their bank account/investment account.
The scammer uses this opportunity to withdraw assets from their account.
Since many users often have their login information stored inside their web browser, this information auto populates when certain websites are loaded. This allows the scammer access to their online information.
Police has asked people to take precautions to protect their assets and sensitive materials stored on their computers and file a report with their local police if they sense a problem.
