TORONTO: Two air passengers from the US have been fined $19,720 each for providing false information about proof of vaccination and pre-departure tests.

They have also been fined for non-compliance with the requirement to stay at a government-authorized accommodation and on-arrival testing requirements.

The passengers landed at Toronto Pearson International Airport from the US on July 18.

The Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) imposed heavy fines on the two passengers after they were found in non-compliance with entry requirements by the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA).

Travellers entering Canada are required to truthfully answer all questions. Giving false information or presenting fraudulent documents about vaccination can result in fines and criminal charges.

Violating quarantine/isolation instructions can lead to a $5,000 fine for each day of non-compliance or for each offence committed. Violators can face even more serious penalties, including six months in prison and/or $750,000 in fines.

For all travellers coming to Canada, it is important to be informed and to plan in advance. It is the traveller’s responsibility to ensure they are eligible to enter Canada and that they meet all of the mandatory requirements, warns the CBSA.
